As you enter the town of Rutherfordton, the signs welcome you to Small Town Friendly, as it has been voted North Carolina’s Small Town of the Year by the North Carolina Rural Center. Small Town Friendly is merely a lifestyle – one where all are welcomed to our delightful town.

Established in 1787, Rutherfordton is one of the oldest towns in Western North Carolina and was the home of Christopher Bechtler who minted American’s first one-dollar gold coin. Whether you enjoy history, outdoor activities, or need something for the children to enjoy, Rutherfordton has it.

You can visit the home of Christopher Bechtler and the Bechtler’s Mint to learn the history of gold in Western North Carolina. If outdoor activities are what you enjoy, you can spend some time walking or riding the Thermal Belt Trail or the Purple Martin Greenway. Spend some time enjoying the beauty that is the Rocky Broad River and paddle your way through Rutherford County on the Broad River Paddle Trail. Venture on over to Cleghorn Golf & Sports Club at Tryon Resort for a round on the 18-hole course designed by George Cobb (famous for Quail Hollow Club and Par 3 at Augusta National). The kids will enjoy some time spent at KidSenses Interactive Museum on Main Street in Rutherfordton or let them enjoy the Kids Main Street Safari.

No matter what you enjoy, you will find pleasure in the beauty of  Rutherfordton.
